Reaching Our Potential
A McKinsey & Company report, The Economic Impact of The Achievement Gap in American Schools predicted that the USA Gross National Product (GNP) would have been $1.3-2.3 trillion higher if the achievement gap between the USA and its international peers such as Finland and Korea were closed by 1998. It's 2009 and we have yet to close the gap.
The report demonstrates that the underutilization of human potential in the USA is extreme and costly. For individuals—avoidable shortfalls in the academic achievement often means lower earnings, poorer health, and higher rates of incarceration. For the USA as a whole—the McKinsey report indicates that the USA wastes $3-5 billion a day by not closing the achievement gap.
