Choose to Create Happiness
Creating joyful experiences is satisfying and purposeful. Today is the International Day of Happiness. Choosing to create happiness often begins with curiosity. Some think happiness is idealistic or even ambitious given the current state around the globe. Others believe choosing to be happy is an effective remedy for changing what is outside their control. There are oodles of opportunities to create authentic happiness by recognizing the simple pleasures of watching your dog enjoy the outdoors, taking in a morning sunrise, or inquiring about the wellbeing of friends and co-workers.
Another way to understand happiness is to define what it means in your own words. I prefer linking happiness with my values. Living out my values is where meaning and happiness resides. My values generate joy and inner peace. I am happiest listening to the wisdom of my values. Sometimes my values point me in the direction of what is ironic and humorous. I have found wisdom’s comic relief in the most unlikely places. Like choosing to write “The Dog God Has Spoken.”
I chose to write this book during a time that was shadowed with challenges. My best friend and partner, Michael has been recovering from a traumatic car accident. The subject matter of this book focuses on empathetic kindness and compassion. I worked hard to capture The Dog God’s voice in order to share encouragement. I wanted to share simple wisdom and new awareness as I was learning a great deal about mindfulness and vitality particularly around brain health. The challenge of writing and remaining disciplined to complete this project was essential to my purpose. I also wanted to create a loving memory for Michael. His friendship and character resonate within this work.
In 2011, the idea of an International Day of Happiness was introduced to the United Nations by Jamye Illien. The first time it was celebrated was on March 20, 2013. Illien also founded the United Nations New Economic Paradigm project and “happytalism”. The aim of this project is to change the economic growth approach for nations by focusing on “happytalism” over capitalism. This connects purpose and profits in a meaningful way. Research has proven that when people believe a business or brand has a valuable purpose they are:
- 4 times more likely to purchase from the company
- 6 times more likely to protect the company in the event of a misstep or public criticism
- 4.5 times more likely to champion the company or recommend it to friends and family
- 4.1 times more likely to trust the company
Over 94% of global consumers report that it is important that the companies they engage with have a strong purpose. The proof is in as consumers will reward those who do. However, most consumers do not believe companies today have a clear and strong purpose. In fact, only 37% of global consumers believe companies are signed up to align purpose with profits.
As consumers we can choose products that foster purpose and profits. We can buy from brands that are trustworthy, connect profits with purpose while also treating people well. If you are a leader, choose to celebrate the International Day of Happiness by considering what you can do to be trustworthy. Be a champion for the wellbeing of the people that you lead, including your team members, vendors, and customers. Decide to be a collaborative leader that genuinely cares. Make this your purpose throughout the years.
Thankfully, awareness helps us evolve. Every day you can choose to be open and receive greater understanding. Choose to apply new awareness as you communicate and interact with others. Become more aware of your authentic needs and give yourself the care that you need. Focus on what is meaningful. Live out your values and purpose. Let yourself receive this kind of happiness. You can choose to create happiness every day. Champion your higher values and share kindness.

One caveat with this first addition, the shipping process is not quite as speedy as some online services. However, the quality of the book is far superior to most print editions.
